Canva built millions of indexed template pages that rank for long-tail design queries, turning Google into a free acquisition channel that delivers users directly into the product with zero onboarding friction.

Challenge

Canva launched in 2013 into a market where Adobe dominated professional design and free tools were fragmented. They needed to reach non-designers who didn't know they needed a design tool. Traditional SaaS marketing (blog content, ads) wouldn't reach people searching for 'birthday invitation template' or 'Instagram post maker'.

Approach

Canva created a template for nearly every design use case imaginable — resumes, social media posts, presentations, flyers, logos — and built each as a unique, SEO-optimized landing page. The templates ranked for hundreds of thousands of long-tail queries. When users clicked through from Google, they landed directly in the Canva editor with the template pre-loaded, experiencing value before signing up. Sign-up was prompted only after the user had already started customizing. This 'value before signup' approach yielded exceptional activation rates. By 2023, Canva had 170M+ monthly active users across 190 countries.
