Challenge

Deploying web applications was painful: configuring servers, managing builds, setting up CDNs. Heroku simplified this but was slow and expensive. Netlify and Vercel emerged but needed developer adoption. Vercel had to convince developers to try yet another deployment platform in a crowded market.

Approach

Vercel (originally ZEIT) focused obsessively on time-to-deploy. The CLI command 'vercel' (or 'npx vercel' for instant use) deployed any project in seconds with zero configuration. The magic moment — typing one command and seeing your site live on a URL — was so impressive that developers shared it with colleagues. Vercel amplified this with perfect defaults: automatic HTTPS, global CDN, preview deployments for every PR, and seamless integration with Next.js (which Vercel also created). The developer experience became marketing: tutorials, conference talks, and Twitter threads showcased the 'just works' deployment. Vercel's free tier was generous enough that developers adopted it for side projects, then brought it to their companies.
