Challenge
Airtable is a powerful no-code database, but its flexibility was also its biggest activation barrier. New users faced a blank base with infinite possibilities and no obvious starting point. Unlike Excel with its familiar grid, Airtable's relational model required understanding before users saw value.
Approach
Airtable launched Universe, a gallery of community-created templates covering hundreds of use cases: content calendars, product roadmaps, inventory trackers, event planning, CRM, and more. Users could browse by category, preview templates, and duplicate them to their workspace with one click. The template immediately populated with sample data, showing users how Airtable's features (linked records, views, automations) worked in practice. Users learned by editing rather than creating from scratch. Universe templates also ranked well for long-tail SEO queries ('content calendar template', 'product roadmap template'), driving acquisition and activation simultaneously. Power users built personal brands by creating popular templates.
