Beehiiv's Built-In Referral System for Newsletters

Beehiiv productized the Morning Brew referral playbook, giving every newsletter creator a built-in tiered referral program — making viral growth a feature rather than a custom build.
Challenge
Newsletter platforms (Substack, Mailchimp, ConvertKit) focused on content creation and delivery but left growth to creators. The Morning Brew referral program had proven spectacularly effective, but replicating it required custom development beyond most creators' capabilities.
Approach
Beehiiv (founded by ex-Morning Brew team members Tyler Denk, Benjamin Hargett, and Jake Hurd) built referral programs as a core platform feature. Every newsletter got: personalized referral links, milestone-based reward tiers, automated reward fulfillment (digital rewards, premium content unlocks, or manual custom rewards), leaderboards, and referral tracking dashboards. Creators could set up a Morning Brew-style referral program in minutes. The feature became a key differentiator against Substack and ConvertKit, attracting growth-minded creators. Beehiiv also added ad network, paid subscriptions, and website builder — but the referral toolkit was the wedge that established product-market fit among serious newsletter operators.
