ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer application in history, reaching 100M users in 2 months with zero marketing spend — driven entirely by product virality and social sharing.
Challenge
OpenAI's API had been available since 2020 but was developer-focused and unknown to mainstream consumers. GPT-3 was impressive but required technical knowledge to use. OpenAI needed to demonstrate AI capabilities to a mass audience to drive adoption, investment interest, and talent recruitment.
Approach
ChatGPT wrapped GPT-3.5 in a simple chat interface that anyone could use — no API knowledge required, no signup friction (initially), just type and get a response. The product was free, immediately impressive, and produced endlessly shareable outputs. Users posted ChatGPT conversations on Twitter, TikTok, and LinkedIn: poems, essays, code, explanations, jokes. Each post was an advertisement. The media covered ChatGPT extensively, amplifying organic buzz. OpenAI did zero traditional marketing — the product's capability was the marketing. The simplicity (just a text box) meant anyone could try it in seconds. ChatGPT reached 100M monthly active users in ~2 months, faster than TikTok, Instagram, or any previous consumer app.
